Child requires emergency flight and operation

Story PictureA sudden illness, grave diagnosis, and lack of resources for a potentially lifesaving emergency operation. It’s a situation that, unfortunately, arises all too often. News Five’s Jacqueline Woods reports from the K.H.M.H.

Jacqueline Woods, Reporting
Ten-year-old Neville Bermudez is in need of an urgent heart surgery to repair a collapsed valve that has left him in very critical condition. Elizabeth Dominguez says she did not know her son was gravely ill because he was always active…that is until last week when he first started to complain about pain in his hands.

Elizabeth Dominguez, Mother
“Just out of the blue, that’s why it surprised everybody. Everybody surprised to know that he is so ill because he didn’t complain. He is a child very active. We have to say “Neville, sit down, behave, relax.” So it’s strange, it’s very strange.”

Today the family is hoping against all odds that their little one will survive. The Rotary Club of Belize through its Gift of Life Programme is doing what it can to get the child to the United States. But even if a hospital can be secured, Bermudez will need to be air ambulanced and that service will cost approximately twenty-four thousand Belize dollars. The family does not have the money and is appealing to anyone who can help them.

Elizabeth Dominguez
“He need to go abroad, urgent as quick as possible because right now it’s a fifty-fifty chance and the longer we take then he might not stand a chance. And right now it’s the finance that we are pleading for help, anybody kind enough to help.”

If you can help Neville Bermudez please get in contact with the family at cell phone numbers 620-0577 or 620-9552, K.H.M.H. social worker Sandra Moguel at telephone number 223-1548, or Yvette Burks at telephone number 223-3292. Jacqueline Woods for News Five.
