Does the Key to Downfall of Maya Civilization Lie in the Blue Hole?
The ancient Mayan civilization, recognized for its monumental contributions to art, science, astronomy and architecture, was perhaps made extinct by a century-long drought. While periods of dry weather have been thought to be among the causes of the Mesoamerican civilization’s fall, a new study of marine sediments off the coast of Belize lends further credence to that argument. The research was conducted by a team led by Andre Doxler, an earth scientist at Rice University in Houston. Tonight, we look at a feature story which focuses on the findings of the underwater study.
