Gapi Says B.S.C.F.A. Resolution was Politically Motivated

The Prime Minister has been the man guiding the ship of government’s intervention in the sugar-cane crisis, but without doubt his navigator has been Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega. So we thought it was fair to ask that gentleman for his take on the current crisis. Vega claims that what happened at Sunday’s meeting of cane-farmers was politically motivated and since the P.U.P. directors and farmers made the most noise, they got their way.

“I think it was a very political situation which is so sad for politics to get involved in the welfare of the industry, an industry that doesn’t only affect Orange Walk and Corozal, but the entire country. To me it is very sad and I wish the outcome was different but the people that make the most noise got their way because if it was a vote by ballots I think it would have been a different outcome. That has never been practiced with the cane-farmers. They keep their regular custom and that is by making noise. In a case like that I would have wished that they would have used ballot papers because there are a lot of people that rather stay quiet because of the sensitivity of the issue. All of us know that they can easily burn your cane field. People are scared. If they burn someone’s cane-field, that’s their income for an entire year.”

When we used the term P.U.P. directors, we were only repeating the words of Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega, who stated on the record that a majority of directors in the B.S.C.F.A. are P.U.P.
