Cayo North Standard Bearer Michel Chebat Reflects on Recent Bye-election
Last week, attorney Michel Chebat was endorsed as the P.U.P.’s Standard Bearer in Cayo North. He replaces Richard Harrison, selected in December 2014 to contest the by-election in that constituency. Chebat had also expressed interest in contesting the by-election, but says he made the decision to step out because it was felt by the Party that Richard Harrison would have been a more popular candidate at that time. But that was then, and now it’s a whole different political story. Today Chebat told News Five that while the U.D.P. was victorious in Cayo North, the numbers don’t lie.

“Obviously the numbers speak differently. I think for the amount of money they spent, for the type of support that the U.D.P. candidate had, getting less than forty percent of the total votes out there is really in my mind less than they had anticipated. I think the field is open, wide open for a new candidate and for some new blood in the division…absolutely.”

“Could you speak to us on your opinion of Mr. Figueroa, not personally but as a candidate?”
Michel Chebat
“I don’t want to get personal. I’ve known him for many years. As a matter of fact we actually went to primary school together. We were classmates. I have not seen much being done in the past month since his election, and I wonder whether or not he actually has the will to work for the people of Cayo North. He is a Minister of State. He is next to the Prime Minister. You would have felt…I certainly would have expected that being in office for a month now, you would have seen some significant ground work in the Cayo North division and that has not happened.”
