Ortega Says Same Association…Different Rules
But while there is little doubt it is the same association, the move is seen as an attempted coup because of the way it was done. The B.S.C.F.A. company has five subscribers, and since they are the ones who registered the company, they’re basically in charge of the Association, or company. As we said, it’s complicated and the current Committee of Management is getting legal advice to chart its next step. Amid that confusion and hostility, Ortega remains focused, maintaining that what they have done is protect the Association and give more power to the membership, so it’s all good.
Alfredo Ortega, Director, Orange Walk Branch, B.S.C.F.A.
“Whenever you register a company then there’s an interim group, because for the first time the Association was registered under the Companies Act, so there needs to be an interim group…even if it is the same Committee of Management that has been in existence, but they will work in the interim until a general meeting is being called in which this new agreement will come into force once the general assembly gives the approval of this new agreement which also gives more power to the general assembly on how they would want to structure the Committee of Management, so this gives more power to the general assembly or to the membership to decide on who will be their leaders, at least in the Committee of Management.”
