Schakron Says She is Undaunted By Mayor Bradley’s Personal Attacks

On Monday, P.U.P. Mayoral Candidate, Yolanda Schakron, who is seeking to unseat U.D.P. Mayor Darrell Bradley in Belize City, held a press conference saying there are flaws in the audit of the Belize City Council finances over the past three years. Schakron, who was flanked by Accountant Jose Coye, pointed to the need for transparency at City Hall. Immediately following her statement, Bradley responded in kind taking political jabs at both Schakron and Coye.  But tonight there is round two because Schakron has taken a further dig at the mayor. She told the media today that she is not fazed by Mayor Bradley’s personal attacks.

“First of all, I would like to tell Darrell. Darrell says he is a Christian; I am also a Christian so I consider us to be brothers in Christ. Actually one week ago, I was at a church and Darrell was there…we were worshipping at the same church. The personal attacks that he does against me doesn’t move me, doesn’t bother me. The thing is Darrell, he said a lot last night but he did not answer the questions. And the question remains: you spend a lot of money on the streets in Belize City. We want to know, and I will ask him again, how much did the streets cost? Who got the contracts? How was that decision arrived at? We want to know that. And by you saying oh I fixed this street that street that street, that dah noh transparency and accountability. We want to see the numbers. The Belize City people deserve that. It is our taxpayers’ money. That bond, we have to pay that back. And the other thing I heard him say that it is about politics; why now? Two years ago, I was not in the political arena, but I believe that as a citizen, as a taxpayer, I have the right to ask my leaders, my leaders that supposed to be governing and supposed to be transparent. I have that right. And I stand up here…I am a voice for many people out there who are afraid to ask the tough questions. But as we walked and we campaigned we heard these questions. I decided to go into the audit, to review it, bring in people who are experts to help us and that’s what we decided to do…to ask him the questions. We are asking Darrell just answer the questions, be accountable, be transparent. I noh di stone yo mango tree yo know. I di get to the roots of the mango tree and dehn look kinda rotten. So just clear up the questions. Answer them.”
