Meet PG’s Third Party Mayoral Candidate

In the past weeks, News Five has travelled across the country, bringing you interviews from candidates vying for the sixty-seven seats up for grabs in the 2015 municipal elections. Over the weekend, we had the opportunity to speak with Wil Maheia, head of the People’s National party, based in Punta Gorda.  The P.N.P. has fielded a full slate in PG, challenging the incumbent People’s United Party and challenging United Democratic Party. The P.N.P. is the underdog in the traditional scheme of thinking. But mayoral candidate Wil Maheia is upbeat and confident that even in the face of possible victimization, if victorious at the municipal level; they have what it takes to get the job done. He says they’ll be taking away votes from both the P.U.P. and U.D.P.

“We have what it takes. We have an experienced team of businesspeople who know how to run the town like a business. With all the people paying taxes we really don’t need Belmopan. Yes we will take the money that’s allocated to PG, and by law they have to give PG some money, but besides that we will be more efficient in doing what we do so that we can fully run this town and of course we are seeking investors to bring to this town, but first we have to make it investor friendly. The town is not investor friendly right now…it’s dirty, the streets are in poor conditions. We have to fix those and we are sure that we can find investors to come and invest in Punta Gorda to kick start this economy. The change begins with us, the people, and as is evident on our team, we have the first elected mayor of Punta Gorda who is running on our slate. So people are changing from U.D.P. to P.N.P….from P.U.P. to P.N.P. So the change begins with the people, and that is what we are banking on. We have people who were U.D.P. supporters and who were P.U.P. supporters who are now supporting us.”
