Free rabies clinic for pets

Story PictureTo promote responsible pet care, this weekend the Belize Humane Society has teamed up with the Environment Health Unit to provide free rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats. The clinic takes place at the Y.W.C.A. compound at the corner of Freetown Road and St. Thomas Street on Saturday, from ten in the morning to three in the afternoon. According to the Public Health Bureau’s Mark Bernard, the anti-rabies campaign is important for pets…and their owners.

Mark Bernard, Public Health Bureau
?Rabies is a very serious disease caused by a virus and is spread from pets, or any warm blooded animals, to humans. One of the tragic things about rabies is that it is fatal. Once that virus has attacked the brain it is ninety-nine point nine-nine percent fatal.?

?It is easily prevented by insuring that your pet is vaccinated against rabies. It does not cost the pet owner anything, the Ministry of Health picks up the tab, and so basically you are doing yourself, protecting yourself, your children, neighbours against this disease by having your pets vaccinated.?

?So we are trying to promote responsible pet care, which does impact positively on public health and then we are trying to do to round up stray animals and then put them to sleep or the Belize Humane Society has a programme where they have them for adoption.?

Again, the rabies vaccination shots are free. The Humane Society and Animal Shelter will also be holding a bake and rumble sale simultaneously on Saturday at the Y.W.C.A. compound.
