Despite Amendment, Opposition Sticks to its Guns, Petrocaribe Must be Repealed!

Francis Fonseca

The Opposition doesn’t want to hear about supplementary appropriations where Petrocaribe is concerned. They maintain that the government is being less than transparent and accountable where the spending of those many millions is concerned – giving only as much information as they deem necessary. P.U.P. Leader Francis Fonseca told the media that where the Petrocaribe motion is concerned, they don’t want to hear amendments, they want to hear repeal.

Francis Fonseca, P.U.P. Leader

“The bottom line with the Petrocaribe Loan Motion is we are not interested in any amendments. The resounding cry and call from the Belizean people—it has come from the Chamber of Commerce, it has come from the National Trade Union Congress of Belize, it has come from APAMO. All of these entities have called for the repeal of this act; of this Petrocaribe Loans Act. Not amendment, not fixing it; repealing it. This is a law that cannot be fixed. It is a law that must go; it must be repealed. It is a law all about Mister Barrow again, his ego, protecting him, above the law; not answerable to anybody. Listens to nobody and answers to nobody; that is Dean Barrow, the prime minister of this country. And this law is all about him; all about him, all about covering up for him, protecting himself. That is what this law is all about and these amendments are absolutely not acceptable to us and not acceptable to the Belizean people. And so we reject them and we continue to demand that this Petrocaribe Loans Act be repealed, be fully repealed. We are prepared to offer, we were today, to offer proper suggestions and recommendations for what can be put in place to replace this Petrocaribe Loans Act.”

In a release, the P.U.P. says that the Petrocaribe Amendment Act and two supplementary budgets were rammed through the house today. It authorized spending of an additional sixty-two million dollars three months after the government got approval to spend one billion of taxpayers’ dollars.

As soon as the general election is completed, the new PUP government should close all the ports of exit to avoid these minister and cronies from leaving the country. They need to answer the people of this country and be charged according to all the illegalities they have committed.
