P.U.P. Says No to Referendum on Territorial Dispute and ICJ Resolution

In the days leading up to the Dangriga bye-election earlier this month, the People’s United Party held a National Party Council meeting in that municipality.  Coming out of the sit down were two motions, including a position on the unfounded Guatemalan claim.  The opposition has expressed a vote of no confidence in the Barrow administration’s ability to deal with the territorial differendum with Guatemala.  As such, the P.U.P. strongly believes that for the territorial integrity and security of Belize, it can no longer support the holding of a referendum locally.  Secondly, the party pledges to continue its work to internationalize the position of the country and ensures that it will continue to safeguard Belize’s rights to its territory, insular and maritime areas.  While the resolutions arise from a July fourth, National Party Council meeting, the divulgence of the P.U.P.’s position is timely since it comes on the heels of a similar stance taken by Vision Inspired by the People earlier this week.  On Wednesday, VIP, during a press conference held in Belize City, reiterated its position on saying no to the ICJ.  The third party’s rationale is that the argument in favor of Belize is not as clear-cut as it is purported to be; consequently, there is more to lose by going to the International Court of Justice for a resolution to the age-old dispute than not to enter into arbitration at all.

Watch ya. Mire!! If you fail to remember history you are bound to repeat it. Diplomacy is the greatest weapon of mankind. Many nations have gone to war because of disputes. Examples: the US civil war, Iran/Iraq, Israel/Palestine etc etc, Those who are clamoring for war and saber rattling have forgotten the millions of dead who have died because of nationalism. We are not animals, we are humans with the ability to think and reason and solve problems without killing each other. If Guatemala wanted to, they could march into Belize because of their share numbers and equipped army. The only thing that is stopping them is diplomacy. Those shouting the loudest and grandstanding will be hiding under their beds hugging their chamber pots when war starts. Common sense dedicates that we cannot win a war against Guatemala. Diplomacy is our only weapon and option. So all you saber rattling fools, chill the eff out.
