In a short while, the second in a series of Caribbean Climate Change exchanges will commence at the Ramada Belize City Princess and will be broadcast right here on Channel Five. The first was held less than a year ago in Barbados. The series is providing clarity on how climate change has affected the region including Belize. And will provide a strategy for CARICOM states to devise a collective position for a new binding global agreement on climate change. Policy makers and civil society will make presentations on their perspective on what the agreement would mean for Belize and the Caribbean.

“This year is one of the biggest years for climate change as far as the negotiation processes are concerned. So we are looking at preparing the Caribbean positions for negotiating for a new binding global agreement on climate change CAP 21 in Paris later this year. So tonight we are doing three things. We are going to look through the United Nations Intergovernmental panel on Climate Change fifth assessment report which is a big deal because they won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for the fourth assessment report. So we are going to be looking at the science in that and we have some of the authors of that report coming in to be speakers. And after that we are going to be looking at the UNFCCC process and we are also going to be reflecting on some of the center’s work over the last ten, eleven years as well as doing that in the context of us recently getting a green climate fund accreditation making us one of only twenty entities in the world that can implement big wide scale projects for the Caribbean. We just got that accreditation alongside the World Bank, the IDB, Deutsche Bank which is a big investment bank, the European Reconstruction Bank for development…a lot of really serious development banks. So we feel very good about that.”
