P.M. Wards Off Criticism from BTL Employees

Dean Barrow

Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced on Monday that general elections will be held on November fourth, 2015, that is only three years and eight months into his second five year term in office. The Opposition feels that the Barrow administration will be rocked by various burning issues, including very recent settlements for the arbitrary nationalizations of B.T.L. and B.E.L. And P.M. Barrow has come under criticism from the Belize Communication Workers Union which compares this settlement to the negotiation conducted with Lord Ashcroft by the previous P.U.P. administration. The P.M. deflected that criticism when he spoke with the media late on Monday in Belmopan.

Dean Barrow, Prime Minister

“What the Musa administration did was to sign a secret accommodation agreement that absolutely gave away the store to the then owners of B.T.L. that obliged us to take tax payer money to subsidize the company in the event that it did not make a guarantee rate of return. What the Musa Administration did before that was to preside over a sage that saw them sell first of all to the Ashcroft interest, and then sell to the Prosser interest and then give back to the Ashcroft interest at a premium. How can that sort of sordid history be compared to what I an d my government have now done which is to settle the claim that saw the previous owners still attempting to get back the company which is then to place beyond any dispute or possibility of reconsidering the ownership once and for all of that essential utility by the government and people of Belize; night and day difference.”
