Former P.U.P. Mayoral Candidate Defects
The U.D.P. sent out a release this morning which was followed by a response from the P.U.P. The U.D.P. release announces that the former defeated mayoral candidate in Belmopan, Jose Chacon, had resigned the P.U.P. and crossed over to the U.D.P. Chacon’s statement in Spanish was attached to the U.D.P. release and followed by a television AD, in which he says that after consultations he was leaving the P.U.P. Long and short of the statement is that nothing has changed in the P.U.P. so he was moving on. The P.U.P. Belmopan Executive countered that statement saying that while it regrets Chacon’s decision, it is a clear manifestation of the desperation of the U.D.P. area representative to infiltrate those in dire need of financial need. It ends saying, “While we hold no malice towards Jose Chacon for this mercenary act, we are reminded that the fate of political defectors is not easy: spurned and distrusted by their communities and in turn treated with disrespect, contempt and disdain by those to whom they pledge sudden loyalty.” For context, when Chacon ran for Mayor, he received one thousand six hundred and ninety-seven votes, while the current Belmopan mayor received three thousand one hundred and ninety votes. If you do the math Chacon was trounced by one thousand four hundred and ninety three votes, a margin of almost two to one.
