All Police Checkpoints Lifted, Chamber Raises Serious Concerns

Arturo Vasquez

If you’re in the type of business which requires moving items or persons from point A to point B without interference from those pesky police at checkpoints…then have we got good news for you. That won’t be a problem anymore – well, at least until after elections. Today, an internal memo dated October thirteenth from the Commissioner of Police to all formation heads confirmed that, “effective immediately you are to stand down from all vehicular checkpoints countrywide as per Commissioner’s directive.” The memo is causing great consternation and concern within the Police Department, and in the public domain. President of the Chamber of Commerce Arturo Vasquez told News Five that it caught them totally by surprise.

Arturo Vasquez, President, Chamber of Commerce

“I heard it on the news myself and to be honest I asked the Prime Minister just now and he said that he knew about it as well and all he knows is that it has been pulled away until Election Day because apparently there is the complaint of too much halting and stoppage of buses and the behaviours that are happening so, for whatever reason, they had decided that it would be pulled until Election Day.”

Mike Rudon

“So he clarified that just till Election Day?”

Arturo Vasquez

“That’s what he said to me today; until Election Day that has been pulled.”

Mike Rudon

“Is that a concern to the Chamber which has to deal with things like contraband which is a really serious concern? This is like you are telling people, oh carte blanche; just move your stuff.”

Arturo Vasquez

“Yeah well that’s what we said to him; we said that means that all the contraband will start flowing. And that’s when he mentioned up to what date that it would have been stopped. So I really can’t speak for the Commissioner. I’m just saying what I was told and what we are concerned yes, that if it is pulled by all means, the contraband can start flowing in. but apparently it is only for a particular period of time.”

  1. Primary Thief, Ali BaBarrow says:

My agents need to move money and armory around.

It is only just they not be bothered doing their work for me.

After the Belizeans rubber stamp my will, things go back to regular thieving.

To lesser thieves, enjoy the election holiday. Your master has spoken.

  2. are you serious says:

Oh my!, prostitutes from Central America can now travel to Corozal and Orange Walk without being afraid, maybe terrorist can take advantage of this, It’s 20 days drugs smuggling OK TO TRAFFIC extravaganza. It’s a lie they have other measures, Customs and Immigration are so low in man-power that they will not be able to do it all alone. Shame on you Vasquez, you were lied to and you believed it like all the other UDP fanatics. Shame on you Barrow, shame on you. You should arrest and charge this COMPOL for putting in jeopardy the security of this country, or send him to Sarstoon maybe Guatemala can pick him up there.

This just stinks bad. If I were the PUP and BPP (every Belizean as a matter of fact) I would start demanding that check points be put back up and that we target especially illegal immigrants and voters. The commissioner has not been the most politically neutral on several issues such as the Penner Scandal, Inspector Segura Investigations, etc. Move the check points after election if it is so damn necessary.
