Cancer Society Receives Donation for Paediatric Cancer

The month of October is dedicated to building awareness about cancer; at least ten percent of the population is affected by the disease.  Earlier today, the Belize Cancer Society received a cash donation from a new organization, Children First and Last, C-FAL. The monies will be spent to assist with medical expenses for children who need to travel to Merida for treatment. Presidents Laura Longsworth and Paul Lecky were on hand for the handing over of the twenty-two-thousand dollar cheque.

Paul Lecky, President, C-FAL

“There is one plot of land, it was sixty by one hundred and twenty, which was given to us through William Castillo and we raffled that and the proceeds from that we committed seventy-five percent of the proceeds to the Cancer Society, specifically for pediatric cancer.”

“Could you give us a specific amount?”

Paul Lecky

“It is in excess of twenty-two thousand. C-FAL Belize, Children First and Last; that’s what C-FAL is for. We have a passion for serving especially children. So cancer, pediatric cancer is very dare to us and we thought that one of our focuses for this year should be to provide funds and help pediatric cancer because we know of the stories and children have to go out of the country and the children don’t have the money and so thought we’d put our effort into raising funds for that.”

“I’m smiling because it is a joy to get some help with the Belize Cancer Society to address the needs of our children. We gladly accepted the invitation from CFAL to collaborate with them on the raffle and we are overjoyed with the results. And I know it is difficult to sell things and so on, especially with the small organizations, but nevertheless we have done well. The funds are very important to the country of Belize. Their donation this morning will be added to our fund of three thousand dollars that we already have received from Social Security Board specifically for children. When we began talking to CFAL, we did not have those funds and so they understand the urgency of helping the children. Today is important because what they are doing now is adding to that fund.”
