Thomas Card Gets Five Years for Wounding His Ex- Common Law

Tonight, thirty-one-year-old Thomas Card is serving more time behind bars after he was slapped with five additional years behind bars at the conclusion of his trial for the wounding of his ex-common-law wife. Card was accused of beating Claire Kelly unconscious on Freetown Road in front of her five year old daughter.     The incident happened on June ninth, 2015. Kelly was walking the daughter she shares with Card to school when he met them and started walking with them. She allowed him to, despite the fact that there is a restraining order against him. But when she tried to take her daughter with her Card went ballistic, knocked her to the ground and beat her until she was unconscious. Card’s story was decidedly different. He claimed that he was walking with Kelly and his daughter when Kelly’s current boyfriend came up to them and punched him in the face. He told the Magistrate that when he tried to punch him back he hit Kelly by accident. But there was an eyewitness who saw the entire incident, and who picked Kelly up off the ground. Kelly was able to identify Card and the man who beat her after Police caught him running away. The Magistrate did not believe Card and sentenced him to five years for wounding. That sentence will run concurrently with a three year term for breach of the restraining order. Card will also have to pay three thousand dollars immediately, in default an addition year and a half. Card has two other charges pending at the lower court for aggravated assault with a machete and harm.
