COLA Questions Supreme Court Decision to Release David Nanes Schnitzer

Geovannie Brackett

The reported flight of Mexican fugitive David Miguel Nanes Schnitzer after being granted Supreme Court bail by Justice Denis Hanomansingh has also raised the ire of the grassroots activist group COLA.  Today, President Geovannie Brackett called to question the provision of bail to an international fugitive wanted for crimes committed in another jurisdiction.  That is set against the backdrop of bail being revoked for a duo of Belizean women whose infractions of the law pale in comparison to those of Nanes.

Geovannie Brackett, President, COLA

“It’s not the first time we’ve had passport issues, documentation issues within the country of Belize.  We’ve had, I think, the most famous one with Citizen Kim, but this event actually transpired before.  This individual had all the, quote on quote, legitimate documents only to be found out that not even the D.P.P. was informed or the police officers that the government had actually rejected this individual’s nationality.  But yet he had driver’s license and so many [other documents.]  Also on his document, the similar names that were on the Citizen Kim document came up again in his document, actually prior to Citizen Kim which I think is an indication of an ongoing corruption within the Immigration Department.  And some of these public officers are still there within the department  at the managerial level and I think that while those in government at different stage try to cover up these corruptions, this goes to show that we actually have a living organism, corruption, that still has a life within the public sector.  What this event also shows you is that there’s a chain of corruption not only in the Immigration Department but throughout other public sector departments within this country.  You know sometimes I get, we at COLA we get to take the heat for trying to bring up these corruption issues but there are not many organizations who are still there standing giving statements on these issues and we found that it was very important that somebody spoke out on this issue.  I actually got calls from home and abroad and I can tell you that this is not sitting well with Washington D.C.  I can tell you that this is a very, very serious issue.  I can only go as far as telling you that there are those in very high authority outside of Belize who view this as new depths of corruption and probably the highest level.”
