San Cas Heist Was An Inside Job

There was a significant heist last Friday in the capital city, and it happened in the parking lot of the Belize Bank. According to reports, two Santiago Castillo deliverymen in their work truck were in the lot when they were approached by a man with a gun who approached them and demanded the day’s take from sales. They allegedly handed over more than twelve thousand dollars and the gunman made his escape. Today, via phone, Superintendent Howell Gillett told News Five that something was fishy from the beginning, and an investigation revealed that it was an inside job.

On the Phone: Supt. Howell Gillett, Officer Commanding, Belmopan

“On Friday, eleventh December 2015—that was last Friday—an employee of San Cas Limited reported that around nine-fifteen p.m. on that very same day, he and another employee was in a San Cas delivery truck in the parking lot of one of our main banks here in Belmopan when they were robbed at gunpoint by a dark skinned male person. That male person was dressed in dark clothing and also wearing a hood over his head. During the robbery, a total of over twelve thousand dollars Belize currency was stolen. No one was injured during the robbery. From the very onset when the report was made, we believed that there was collusion on the part of the employees. That belief was solidified as the investigation progress; so much so that one of the employees will be charged for conspiracy to commit robbery and the suspected gunman will be charged with robbery, possession of unlicensed ammunition and possession unlicensed firearm. I’m very pleased to announce that to date we have recovered over eight thousand dollars in cash, a nine millimetre pistol and a magazine containing fourteen live rounds of nine millimetre ammunition. Meanwhile the investigation continues. I want to say to all the officers who worked tirelessly over the weekend and to the public, who as usual have supported us…thank you so much. We will never be able to be at all crime scenes, but whenever a crime is reported, we will use every fibre in our being to bring to justice those responsible.”

“Sir, you said you’ve recovered significant portion of the money as well as the firearm you believe was used in the commission of the crime. Can we assume then that you have persons in custody at this point?”

On the Phone: Supt. Howell Gillett

“Yes that’s right….true assumption. We have two persons in detention—one is one of the employees who was in the truck and then the suspected gunman is the other person in custody.”
