Cuban Migrants in Limbo at Costa Rica to Spend Holidays in Detention

And in an update to the crisis of the Cuban migrants stranded in Costa Rica, they will be spending the holidays in that country. That is because negotiators have failed to find a solution to the month old crisis. The only agreement reached at the Mexico meeting was for another round of discussions planned for December twenty-eighth when the representatives from Central America, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico and the United States will meet again looking for a solution for the transit of some seven thousand Cuban migrants who are waiting for temporary visas to leave Costa Rica and Panama on their way to the U.S.  Costa Rican Foreign Minister Manuel González said the meeting allowed officials to “take a step in the right direction, as talks included the participation of major actors beyond SICA.” Aside fromNicaragua,GuatemalaandBelizehave also said no to the transit of the Cubans.

Belize made a smart judgment. The people are not being persecuted, asylum as using Belize as a passageway is not the answer. If US wanted them they are 90miles from their shores and would be granted immediately.
