Record Low Murders in Southside Belize City at Close of 2015

As we approach the final few hours of 2015, it is with the news that at least at this hour there have been no murders reported on the Southside of Belize City for the month of December, and only eight in the last six months. Those are unprecedented statistics, and a stark contrast to early this year and past years. But Commander of the Eastern Division South Chester Williams says it’s not about statistics, but about saving lives.

“When the month of December began I sat with my management team and I said to them – I want a murder-free December. It seemed far-fetched. I said to them that we would do all that we could do to have a murder-free December, just as we did in September. We are now at the thirtieth of the month and we have not had any murder since the beginning of the month. I hope that we can maintain that trend even going into next year because we do not want anyone to die. It’s not a matter of statistics, but about trying to save as many lives as we can. So what we are doing is we have our officers on the ground. We have intense supervision to ensure that the officers are doing what they should be doing, coordinating the patrols and so forth. We will see how that goes between now and the thirty-first. We are hoping that we will end the year as successful as we have been in earlier months.”
