Despite Claims of Carrot Importation, Mexican Official Says There’s No Increase

Carrot farmers in the Orange Walk District have reported that seventy percent of their produce has been rotting in the fields because government has been issuing licenses to select persons for the importation of the vegetable from Mexico. The Government has countered that claim saying that it allows carrots to be brought in only when the demand is greater than the supply. Today, Ambassador Quesnel was also asked about the carrot situation. Interestingly, he says that there has been no increase in the amount on carrots imported from Mexico.

“You also mention vegetables and I guess you are referring to carrots, the problem with carrots. We have seen the last statistics and we have not seen a change in pattern of in the carrot exports to Belize from Mexico. So there has been a quota and this amount of carrots, we export to Belize all the same as last year. And we have data up to October, but we don’t see a chance of pattern. So I don’t know if it is really Mexican carrot that is affecting the local market in Belize.”
