Guatemalan Questioned by Police in Swaney Murder Released

Victor Manuel Franco Menjivar

The Guatemalan fisherman found in the immediate vicinity when American Anne Swaney was killed is back in his home country, out of the reach of Belizean investigators. The executive producer on Chicago’s ABC7 was on a one week vacation at Nabitunich in San Jose Succotz when she was murdered. Police found Menjivar fishing nearby.   Twenty-four-year-old Victor Manuel Franco Menjivar was extensively questioned by police then charged only for immigration offences when no immediate link to Swaney could be found. Today we have confirmed that Menjivar paid his immigration fine and in keeping with procedure was escorted to the Western border and is now out of the country. We note that swabs were taken from Swaney but it is a certainty that the results are not back yet. No matter what those results show, though, it won’t matter to Menjivar who is back home in Guatemala.

Are you serious???? I am not assuming Mr.Menjivar is guilty. However, we will probably now never know. It is no wonder that Belize is quickly becoming the murder capital of the world. Your justice system is so obviously inadequate and ineffective. It seems as if you care nothing about legitimate justice. Until Belizeans in and out of government demand and make changes in laws that let murderers and other criminals escape justice on ill conceived technicalities, then Belize will unfortunately continue to be a third world banana republic. I wonder why tourism is down? Don’t bother wasting money on tourism advertising, the money would be better spent cleaning up your criminal “justice” system and providing government tax paid K-12 education for ALL Belizean children. Is there a greater priority? Educate your children. Yes, education is expensive. But lack of education is clearly far more expensive!!! Break the cycle! Be the change. Educate ALL of your children.
