Ombudsman and Commissioner of Police Sign MOU

Allen Whylie & Lionel Arzu

Last week in the House, the Leader of the Opposition, Francis Fonseca complained about the inactivity and ineffectiveness of Ombudsman Lionel Arzu saying he did not enjoy the confidence of the people. Fonseca said he could not support the extension of his contract. Notwithstanding, the Ombudsman got busy today; he signed off a Memorandum of Understanding with Commissioner of Police Allen Whylie at the Racoon Street Police Station, Belize City. According to a release, the intention is to strengthen cooperation between the offices of the Ombudsman and the Police in the areas of protection and promotion of human rights and on the principles of rule of law, mutual equality and reciprocity.
