How Many Teachers Will Be Affected By Reform?

Patrick Faber

Approximately five hundred primary and eight hundred high school teachers will be directly affected by the reform of the education system.  But there are some exceptions. Teachers who are in the process of getting their education certificates or pedagogical training will be able to apply for a special permit to further allow them to remain in the system. Education Officials spoke on those for whom considerations will be made.

Patrick Faber, Minister of Education

“We are being very lenient with early childhood teachers for the special permit. In fact, I think the committee has said they will be pretty much giving that permit to all of our early childhood teachers who don’t meet the bar in this instance.”

Marleni Cuellar

“Now there are other exceptions that you are making as well. You are looking at teachers who are nearing retirement as well.”

Carol Babb

Dr. Carol Babb, Chief Education Officer

“Right…teachers who will be retired up to 2018. So if a teacher will be retired next year or up to 2018, they will be given a special permit. And teachers who have seventy percent of their training completely, will also be given a special permit. Teachers who live in remote areas—like San Vicente or very remote areas—and have difficulty in accessing training, but of course they will have to demonstrate that they tried to get study leave and were unable to get it; we will also consider them.”

Debbie Domingo

Debbie Domingo, Chair, Association of General Managers

“The folks teaching at the high school level with an associate’s degree for who a program to support their specialization isn’t available. We have a number of people teaching at the high school level; let’s say in art, with an associate’s degree in art. In Belize, we don’t have a program that would support that person getting a bachelor’s and then accessing the diploma in education program offered by the University of Belize. And so consideration will be given to persons at the secondary level who have these specializations.”

Dr. Carol Babb

“Also persons who are on study leave. If their provisional license will expire while they are on study leave, they will need to apply. You must apply; we will not automatically give you this special permit. They will also be granted that special permit.”

The deadline for teachers to apply for the special permit is March fifteenth.

I believe what the Minister of Education is doing is very intelligent. I want to see progress. This is no Politics this is our Children’s Future. Tell me now, who would want to have a surgery done on them by someone who did not studied to be a Surgeon? Apply it to Education, how can I be effective in a classroom if i studies Tourism? Come on people wake. There are some “‘Teachers” in the classroom for the pay but far from having the Passion and Interest on opening the door of opportunity to your Children. To me teaching is Polishing and enriching young minds, preparing them for this fast advancing technological World. I Applaud You Minister Faber!

jejeje MNHG you just added salt on the wound, now this is going to send bad vibes to some teachers that are there which we call “with strings attached” that are in place by political favors. I feel sorry for them but really our education system needs to be upgraded and have the teachers license to do their jobs with proper documentation legally.

And I was here thinking Esquivel was bad. Imagine, he sent home close to 900 now this evil narcissistic, smog SOB is gloating for getting rid of 1300. Your Party’s day of reckoning will be at the polls.
