Benguche Residents Make Grisly Discovery

A fetus believed to be between six and seven months, was pulled out from an overgrown lot in the Benguche area of Dangriga on Thursday afternoon. The unborn was reportedly discarded in a piece of cloth that had been set on fire.  A resident spotted a dog with the fetus and immediately called the police. By any stretch it is one of the most horrible events to cover and because it is so gruesome, we will not be showing the images of the unborn. Dangriga police believe the mother is a high school student. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

The horrid image of a human fetus being dragged away by a pack of dogs, for those who witnessed the unsightly occurrence in Dangriga on Thursday, is etched in their minds permanently.  Just how an unborn would end up being aborted and carelessly discarded, only to be discovered sometime later by crossbreeds roaming this neighborhood is anyone’s guess.  It’s callous, by any stretch of the imagination, and utterly inconceivable.

“That day my dogs, I have a lot of dogs in my yard, and one of them got away and while he was roaming around the area, you know how dogs are, they probably smelled something bloody or something dead.  So when my dog went and discovered, you know, this corpse, ih probably like bite it.  You know how regular dog woulda just like, smell and bite or check, and you know, by the Grace of God, you know, the dog just pull out the corpse on the street and that’s when passersby and my cousin in front of the yard just, you know just saw like the dog, the feet of the baby, you know, just hanging.  So my cousin just tell the dog, “Hey! Hey!” you know.  The dog just dropped whatever it had in its mouth and when we checked and looked it was the body of a baby.”

It’s a jarring, firsthand account of what transpired here in the Benguche Area.  What prompted the expecting mother to terminate her pregnancy around the third trimester?  Where did this stillbirth occur and why would such an inhumane act of cruelty be allowed to take place?  In all of Sergeant Wilfredo Ferrufino’s years as a law enforcement officer, those answers are also escaping him.

“Sometime around 2:50 p.m. on Thursday, police received information that there was a fetus on the road.  This would be Pen Road, that would be in the Benguche Area.  Police responded and indeed there was a fetus in the road.  It was taken to the hospital and the doctors there who examined it determined that the baby or the fetus was between six and seven months.  We have contacted Dr. Estradabran and he will be conducting a post mortem examination on it, that would be sometime next week, for him to confirm the details of the fetus.”

The resident, who asks to remain anonymous, strongly believes that it may have been someone from the neighborhood, presumably with assistance from another unknown person, who carried out the abortion.

“Now this is clearly the result of an abortion.  Do you know anyone in the area who would have been a suspect as to a pregnancy that was aborted?”

“Well boss, I cyant seh.  You know how, I noh know who pregnant or nobody outta di yaad ya, no woman noh live ya so di neighbors dehn, I noh think nobody wahn come from far wahn come from nowhere and throw nothing ‘bout ya so.  Ih haffi be somebody weh mi deh bout dehn neighborhood ya, you know.  Ih simple.  Ih haffi be somebody close by, da wa birth so from di time dehn tek out da baby or let go da baby dehn no got time fi do nothing.  And ih cyant be nobody from far cause we have a big canal weh dehn coulda throw that.  Dehn have the beach up da side, you have di river, we have high bushes ova soh.  So, do the math, ih only simple and logic fi know dat ih haffi be somebody right bout ya.”

That deduction is presently being done by local police.  While they have not zeroed in on a suspect, the results of that ongoing investigation will determine the direction of any subsequent criminal proceeding.

“We are conducting an investigation to determine who the mother was and then after we have determined that we will see if anybody is liable for criminal charges and then we will proceed from there.”

It is strongly believed that the pregnant female is a high school student; however, that remains to be confirmed by hospital officials or other relevant authorities.
