Port Commander Wins International Women of Courage Award
But there is some good news to report and that is because Port Commander of Immigration and Nationality Department Debra Baptist-Estrada has won the International Women of Courage Award. The award is given annually to women who have gone the extra mile to show leadership in advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment, often at great personal risk, says a release from the U.S. Embassy. The award to Baptist-Estrada was presented by the John Kerry, Secretary of State at the U.S. State Department. Outstanding women from many other countries were also awarded but Baptist is the only recipient from Belize and from the Caribbean to make the cut. The other awardees are from Bangladesh, China, France, Guatemala, Iraq, Malaysia, Mauritania, Russia, Slovakia, Sudan, Tanzania Thailand and Yemen.
