Is Guatemala Attempting to Annex the Sarstoon?
As we said, the People’s United Party held an emergency meeting this morning in light of the amassing of troops in the Sarstoon as well as at the Adjacency Zone. The lead of the advisory group for the P.U.P. is Senator Eamon Courtenay, who is also a former Foreign Minister. Prior to that meeting, we spoke one-on-one to Courtenay on the crisis. He says the troop build-up and the inflammatory statement by President Morales that Guatemala is exerting sovereignty at the Sarstoon, represents an annexation of our territory.

“Well I think like all Belizeans I am deeply concerned by the reaction, statements and the decision by the president of the Republic of Guatemala. It is very clear that he has taken a very unfortunate and sad incident and used it as a basis in which to first of all make very inflammatory and provocative statements which are lacking in any basis and foundation. They are disproportionate and quite frankly lacking in statesmanship. More importantly we are deeply concerned on this decision to mass troops on our border which constitute a treat to peace and security in Belize. And of course far more egregiously his announcement that they will exercise sovereignty over the entire Sarstoon and to deploy his military forces to back up that statement. That amounts to an annexation. It is a direct attack to our territorial integrity and the People’s United Party condemns it, unreservedly, absolutely and comprehensively.”

The Prime Minister lacks a backbone. He needs to deploy the BDF in The Belizean side of the Sarstoon. This is not an aggressive stand on the part of Belize, it is our statement that we will not accept any annexation of Belizean territory. There is no disputed land involved We are purely exercising our sovereign right to OUR territory. If Guatemala takes a little bite of Belizean territory, they will eventually swallow all of Belize. Let us “rattle” our sabers and pursue a rightful end to hostilities through the truth of what has occurred in the Sarstoon and Chiquibul.
We cannot take no aggressive stand militarily, but what we can do is to speak out against the crap and record videos and use the internet to let the rest of the world see what they are doing. Equipt them with some body camera and record what they are seeing and beam it to the rest of the world in real time! Forget the he said she said BS!
