Academic Opportunities in Canada
Canadian High Commissioner Deborah Chatsis is visiting from Guatemala where the High Commission is located. Her visit coincides with the ongoing Caribbean Conference on Indigenous Peoples and she has taken time to also promote Canadian educational opportunities.

“I had several objectives…one was to participate in an education mission that was here. We have a number of educational programs with secondary educational institutions from Atlanta, Canada that were here. So we had various meetings through the course of the week and there were a couple of events where students and parents and other educational experts were invited to meet to find out more about the institutions in Canada and to explore linkages between institutions in Canada and Belize as well as to provide information to students who are interested in studying in Canada. The other main objective was to open the Caribbean Conference on indigenous peoples that is ongoing right now. So this is something that was sponsored by our development program, our Caribbean regional development program. So it is a great opportunity for indigenous peoples from Belize and other countries in the region to meet together and discuss issues of common concerns and challenges. And while Walter was in town, we took the opportunity to meet with some of the civil society groups that we’ve managed to support with our disaster risk management fund.”
