O.A.S. Verified Release of Belizeans

According to Colonel Lovell, they have been liaising with their counterparts and colleagues in Guatemala and at the O.A.S. since day one, verifying that no Belizean was still in Guatemalan territory. But that’s a cute situation. Verification by the O.A.S. that the Belizeans had been released, as we were told by Lovell, would seem to lend overwhelming weight to the claim by Roger Plett.

“I was given word that the military had no patrol in that area but we still continued to look into these kinds of information and answers that we receive from our sources. – I was pleased when I heard from the O.A.S. also that the individuals who were held and also their equipment were released that evening, and so I didn’t see it as much of an issue thereafter.”

“You stated right at the very beginning that you spoke to the O.A.S., or somehow you didn’t feel that there was an issue because the O.A.S. had confirmed that these persons had been released, which suggests that they were detained. If they were released they had to be detained. And that wasn’t a concern for you that these persons had been detained?”

“It’s always a concern for me Mike. And that’s the reason why we have insisted even when one was reportedly over there on his own accord still assisting, we insisted that Foreign Affairs check to see that that person was not held there against his will, and that he was in fact released as the O.A.S. was suggesting.”
