G.O.B. Responds to Plett Allegation of Kidnapping
Six days after Guatemalan military and civilians allegedly came onto Belizean soil and abducted two men, along with a tractor and bulldozer, there is finally official comment from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and National Security. Today, the C.E.O.s of both hosted a press briefing to inform the public that they have indeed, despite appearances, been on top of the situation since last Thursday. Perhaps we should start tonight’s coverage with the news that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has allegedly contacted the O.A.S. to request a verification exercise. C.E.O. Lawrence Sylvester told the media that today’s headline should about the action taken by his ministry.
Lawrence Sylvester, C.E.O., Ministry of Foreign Affairs
“Firstly let me say that the takeaway headline for this is that the government of Belize yesterday, the seventeenth of May requested of the office of the Organization of American States in the Adjacency Zone a formal verification into the incident reported by the Pletts which allegedly occurred in the Green Hill area of the Yalbac of the Cayo District. We are aware, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is aware of an ongoing police investigation into the matter and we await the outcome and the findings of both parallel processes. The next actions…what appropriate action the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government of Belize will do will be dependent on the findings to be reported by the OAS and the Police.”
Ret’d. Col. George Lovell, C.E.O., Ministry of National Security
“They did a detailed investigation…an investigation which is still ongoing. I had asked that they go on the ground along with Roger and Mr. Ayala and try to walk over the ground and confirm what happened and where it occurred. I was told that was done on the thirteenth, the day after the incident, and that as a result of that encounter and those interviews that they had with Roger and Mr. Ayala decided that they were going to do further investigation which is still ongoing.”
