Untrammeled Access to Sarstoon is Now a Work in Progress
Elrington admits that to reach a Sarstoon Protocol is a gradual process that hopefully will materialize a document within the next six months. As for untrammeled access, well that too has been relegated to a work in progress.
Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs
“We don’t have total and complete control over the Guatemalans but we are working with them and they are working with us to ensure that we have, as the prime minister said, untrammeled access.”
Isani Cayetano
“So has there been a draft protocol in terms of the meeting?”
Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington
“Nothing has been drafted yet but we are making incremental steps to having a draft protocol.”
Isani Cayetano
“Has the changes to the Compromis been ratified by the Guatemalan congress?”
Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington
“No. That is something that still needs to be done and we still need to amend our Referendum Act. It’s a work in progress and we hope to get it done in due time.”
Isani Cayetano
“Last week when I spoke with you, you mentioned that the initial stages of investigation into the Chiquibul shooting of the thirteen-year-old minor was just about to get off the ground. Can you provide us with an update as to whether Mexico and the United States have moved to assist Guatemala?”
Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington
“I know for a fact that somebody from the United States is assisting the O.A.S., it’s not a question of assisting Guatemala or Belize, it’s assisting the O.A.S. and I am told that they are making good progress. I can’t give the details but I am told that they are making good progress.”
