Cops Honored for Saving Drowning Boy

A young boy in Belize City is alive tonight, thanks to the heroic actions of three members of the Eastern Division North’s Strike Team. According to reports, the eleven year old was on Marine Parade with two young relatives when he ran up a pier and then jumped into the water. He went under, and that’s when a call immediately went to Police. A circling Strike Team got the call via radio at ten twenty-five and responded immediately. Today the three men, PC Jesse Lopez, PC Christian Cawich and Sergeant Anibal Castellanos received awards and a reward for their quick thinking and bravery.

“When we reached on the scene some civilians told us that the child was already at the bottom of the water, forcing us to jump in the water – myself and PC Cawich went into the water and started feeling for the individual. After a little while found him in the water unconscious, took him out of the water and placed him in the Police mobile and performed CPR on him up to the time we reached at the Karl Heusner memorial Hospital where the doctors did what they had to do to resuscitate the young boy.”

“It was teamwork. We had to work together with our NCO Sergeant Castellanos and PC Lopez. It all happened in seconds. We just dived the little boy and gave him CPR. As we reached the hospital doctors did a good job and so we could save the life of the kid. Thanks to God when we checked his vital signs he still had a heartbeat and pulse so I told Jesse let’s do CPR until we reach the hospital.”

“How does it feel for you to be recognized for doing this?”

Jesse Lopez

“As an individual of course we’ll feel good, but it’s all in a day’s work. This is what we get paid to do.”
