Is Police Investigation Being Conducted Properly?

Llewellyn Lucas

Where the investigation into the murder of Pastor Llewellyn Lucas is concerned, there have been more questions than answers. Because the public is well aware of the accused murderer’s connections very high up in the Police Department, his connections to the Minister of National Security and his connections to other U.D.P. ministers, there is much skepticism about the will to get to the bottom of everything and leave no stone unturned. So we asked the PM about it.

Mike Rudon

“In terms of the police investigation, there is a lot of skepticism and just very quickly…for example, the person who is the lead investigator in the Mason case is a junior officer, a corporal. He just made corporal.”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I don’t know who is the lead investigator.”

“His name is Holly Vasquez. He was arrested in 2010 for conspiracy to commit robbery. He is the person in charge of the investigation.”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I would want to be sure that you know whereof what you speak. Well I see the C.E.O. here; I am not saying it isn’t. I want to be certain though. I am not going to get like somebody who told you, you people are always ninety percent wrong—it is not an opinion I share—but I would want to be positive or I would want to ascertain from the Ministry of National security personnel whether that is in fact the case. Perhaps you can continue Mike and in the meantime, if some kind of a check can be made because a lot can depend on the accuracy.”

Mike Rudon

“That is one thing that immediately raised eyebrows; a very junior officer and again the allegations in his past. Two, there is the situation with Melissa Ferguson who was the companion or common-law or wife of William Mason. There was a surveillance video which was released on the Saturday after Mister Mason was arrested; he was arrested on the Friday. The police had it from the Saturday. We understand now that police are actively seeking Miss Ferguson because she is seen in that video in a very active role. But Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday….and they started seeking her on Thursday.”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Mike again, I’m very sorry, but you are putting me in a position where I am unable to answer you. I do not know that what you are saying is factually correct. I know that I was told of a video by Deputy Commissioner Blackett and it was not from the Saturday that you are talking about. so again in the absence of Blackett or somebody in the hierarchy who can in fact validate what you are saying, I can’t answer you. That’s not the impression I have from the briefing that I got from Blackett in the immediate aftermath, in the days immediately following the discovery of poor Pastor Llewellyn’s head with Mister Mason. So I am afraid you really would have to address those questions directly to Mister Blackett, who I believe is the acting Commissioner. I will address the questions to him. But I am telling you insofar as what I have in terms of the briefing he gave to me, it does not coincide, it does not square with what you’re saying.”

  1. Hatari says:

OK, take the highest profile criminal case in a long, long time and put a very junior officer with a suspected criminal past as the lead investigator . . . that should do the trick and the dirt will stay under the rug. Case closed! What a joke! And by the way, what was Pastor Lu doing as Mason’s middle man with the extorted Mennonite? Oh, we don’t want to talk about that.

  2. Joe Martin says:

Mason greased too many wheels so this is how a ministers answer when there is something to hide. See they were all on the Mason payroll. That is what I get from the way PM is answering.

  3. Marie says:

Never send a Rookie to do a man’s job especially when it has to do with murder. Church better get a separate investigator and criminal attorney.

  4. Elgin Martinez says:

The affluent Belizeans need to be targeted by the criminal element then maybe things will change.
