B.N.T.U. Reflects on World Teachers’ Day

Kathleen Flowers

As we mentioned earlier in the newscast, today is World Teachers Day. While it was not planned to coincide with this ongoing strike, B.N.T.U.’s Kathleen Flowers, says they are gratified that the chosen theme for this year’s observance, “Valuing Teachers – Improving Their Status,” speaks directly to their present circumstances.

Kathleen Flowers, President, Belize District Branch, B.N.T.U.

“It was not planned or designed this way, but it puts a spotlight on the value of teachers. In the theme alone, “Valuing Teachers – Improving Their Status;” just international and it’s more known as World Teachers Day. Every year the UNESCO body puts a theme that speaks to the value of education, the value of the work that teachers do. But this year particularly, the theme highlighted valuing teachers. And being that it is in the midst of what we are doing, it makes teachers hold on to the importance of their profession even more and highlights and speaks to the nation that what we do is something that the country cannot do without. So we are asking to take a step back and see what value we play in this community and help us to improve our status.”
