U.D.P. members to picket B.N.T.U. office; Union warns against intimidation
While the Belize National Teachers’ Union will be meeting with the Prime Minister on Thursday, a press release issued today announces that, as confirmed by police, members and supporters of the United Democratic Party will be picketing outside the B.N.T.U. headquarters between eight-thirty in the morning and twelve-thirty in the afternoon. While the Union is not objecting to the protest itself, the press release raises the concern of potential intimidation, as members gather there on a daily basis, conducting, according to the Union, activities related to their Stand Up for Belize Campaign. They are concerned that neither teachers nor workers with the Public Sector Workers’ Trust, which occupies the first floor of the building, will be able to come and go as they please. The B.N.T.U. asks all Belizeans to join in calling the Government out for another attempt at fear, intimidation, causing inconvenience and showing obvious desperation. The Union reiterates that all their actions have been peaceful and calls on Police to ensure that no damage is done to the B.N.T.U.’s property or that any harm comes to the teachers who congregate there.
