Medics and Dentists Discuss Advances in Health Profession
The Belize Medical and Dental Association is hosting its thirty-fifth annual congress this week. The three-day event kicked off with a conference today sponsored by the Ministry of Health through its maternal and child health program. The annual event brings today nurses, doctors, dentists and other medical partners to discuss health in Belize. This year’s congress is being celebrated under the theme, “Advances in Medicine and Dentistry in Belize.” News Five spoke with acting president of the association and he tells us what is being discussed at the congress, key among the topics is Zika. Here’s Dr. Jose Moguel:

“We are trying to highlight the different medical services and conditions that burden our society and try to present to the different communities, doctors, nurses and allied health an education session that secures accreditation or allows for credit hours earning that will assure that the physicians and the dentists can get the requirements for licensing and re-certification.”

“Now, when you talk about some of the common things, in terms of the common medical issues we have in Belize, what are some of the more common ones that nurses and doctors have to deal with?”

“We identified different medical conditions and dental very prevalent and present in our midst. For instance, infections or infecto-contagious diseases, like Zika, which is the highlighted topic of today. Of course, in the manner in which it affects the ladies, the babies, we all hear about this that is very present in our society; that is for the pre-congress. In the congress session, we address things that are challenging to us; pulmonary embolism, decubitus ulcers and different conditions, nutrition, condition in new born and neo-nates and other conditions that are very important in our society.”

“What happens after the three day congressional session here? What are some of the implementation that will take place in addressing these issues discussed here?”

“Well, as you see, this event brings together the most important partners in health care delivery, both in private and public sector, the Ministry of Health. And from here on, we learn how to manage these conditions and we also may make recommendations to the different regulatory bodies as to the way we can improve in the health care delivery of these conditions.”
