Taiwanese-Belizean and Mexican Artists in Latest Exhibit

In the next few minutes, a painting and digital art exhibition will open at the Institute of Mexico on Newtown Barracks in Belize City. Punto de Encuentro, La Humanidad – Meeting Point: Humanity is a project of Taiwanese Belizean artist, Yaoling Lee that brings together the artwork of Lee and two other artists – Jose Luis Rumbo and Monika Gabrys. Combined, the thirty pieces are portraits of people, including a few edgy nude artworks that showcase emotions of the models. News Five visited with the artists today and here’s a highlight of what will be on display.

“We are three artists and we are exhibiting with Taiwanese Belizean Yaoling Lee who organized this project and invited us to participate. Mexican artist, Monika Gabrys, is also here; she is also a member of the group of Yucatan artists. I have five of my art pieces here as well. We have a total of thirty pieces on display among all of us. Yaoling Lee’s paintings are oil as well as Monika’s and my ones are digital art. We are very diverse with our work. We do distinct art, but we share common pieces depicting the human face, the human body to express sentiments and emotions.”

“My pieces, my paintings are personal and self-portraits. That’s what interests me more because through these persons: my friends, my daughter and myself, I can portray what I feel, what is happening in the moment, human values and even human emotions. I have twelve pieces that I am presenting and they were all created in different years, but primarily between 2016 and 2015.”

“Two years ago I begin to really focus on my own work. Yes I used to teach; I know before. But now I just want to focus on my own work. I have twelve pieces at this time and nine is portraits and they are from my project I did in 2015. I did over one hundred pieces of portrait, Belizean friends. They pose for me and we all become very good friends. All my pieces are from that period of time and the other three is different style, but it is a process and I really enjoy the process. I have very solid fundamental training and long time ago, when I was younger, what I did only, I worked with nude. For me it is the art. So I hope people when they come to see my work, the nude, they see if from a different angle. It is not about woman, men, this sex and that sex. No, no, no. It is the beauty behind that or before that—the beauty between the color, shape and a space.”

The exhibit will remain open for two and a half months. Tonight’s launch will feature musical presentations and is free for the public.
