Chinese Shop Owner “Stung” by G.S.T. Department
Mile Eight, George Price Highway businessman, forty-seven year old Zihuie He, has been accused of three violations of the General Sales Tax Act. The businessman was caught up in a sting operation set up by the office of the General Sales Tax on October twenty-ninth, 2016. He, the owner of Jacky’s Supermarket, appeared before Magistrate Norman Rodriguez with translator Edwin Kwan to answer to charges of failure to issue a tax receipt, failure to utilize a programmable cash register and failure to keep proper books and records. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and met bail of one thousand five hundred dollars. Disclosure will be swiftly prepared in time for his next court appearance on December sixth, when he will be tried.

It is a very unfortunate reality that the Chinese community in general (stores especially) do this all the time. There Is always a backup calculator that is used to add up groceries. They very seldomly provide receipts. There needs to be better crackdown on these businesses because not providing a receipt I’d w voluntary evasion of taxes. This is a mere grain of sand in the bucket of blatant tax evasion. Penalties should be upped to ensure government gets its fair share and these tax evaders are penalized to the full extent of the law.
