City jacker picks wrong victim

A Belize City man can count himself lucky to be among the living tonight after he picked the wrong woman to jack. That woman, forty-three year old Debbie Vasquez, a member of the Belize City Council, told police that around ten Friday night as she was walking home from work on North Front Street, an assailant grabbed her and after a five minute struggled managed to escape with her gold chain, valued at over a thousand dollars. Unknown to the snatcher, Vasquez was in possession of a licensed thirty-eight pistol. As he ran away the councillor unleashed her weapon’s fury, seven shots in all, none of which hit the fleeing felon. Police quickly searched the area and detained twenty-one year old James Elliot of Ladyville, along with the gold chain. Elliot has been charged with robbery. Vasquez told News 5 that the bullets were “warning shots.”
