Tourist Dies Suddenly in Placencia

An American national lost his life on Tuesday evening when he drowned in Placencia.  Fifty-three-year-old Steven Gail Wine, from his hometown of Erie, Colorado, was vacationing on the peninsula when he decided to go swimming.  Sometime around six-thirty p.m., Wine left his common-law wife Annie Berrardi and other members of his family at the Barefoot Bar.  He set out to the beach near the Tipsy Tuna Restaurant and Bar.  A short time thereafter, Berrardi went looking for her husband and found him motionless in the sea.  Police were quickly called to the location where they observed another person administering CPR to Wine.  Several minutes later, a medical doctor would also appear on the scene to perform CPR.  Despite several attempts, they were unsuccessful in reviving Wine.  He was pronounced dead a short time later.  In other news coming out of Placencia, it is reported that the vehicle which police claimed was involved in a fatal road traffic accident on the Placencia Road has been buried by its owner.  The mishap occurred on the morning of March first, when two persons, believed to be Hungarian nationals, perished when the vehicle collided into a lamppost.  The pickup truck reportedly burst into flames, burning the occupants beyond recognition.  The case has since been taken over by the Major Crimes Unit of the police department and is being investigated as a potential case of double murder. Belmopan police would not provide any details on this case.
