Belize Bank Office at Matalon Building Shot At
The Matalon Building on Coney Drive was shot up Tuesday night. Police say as many as thirteen shots were fired and eleven of them met their target on the first two floors, which are used by the Belize Bank. The bank issued a brief statement today to confirm the incident, saying that no one was injured and that investigations were taking place. This afternoon, police added a few more details. Surveillance footage captured a gunman exiting a car sometime around ten p.m. before walking down Sun Dial Avenue and opening fire at the building. He then sped away in the vehicle. Assistant Superintendent Francisco Ack says so far there is no motive and no known suspect:
ASP Francisco Ack, Deputy Commander, Precinct 4
“Indeed a report of shots being fired in that area of Coney Drive where, when the police responded, they observed that the building that is called Matalon Building where the Belize Bank is housed has been shot at. So far investigation is not revealing anything because no witness; nobody see anything because it happened around ten o’clock last night. However, we are investigating the matter and we are not leaving anything unturned. We are going to follow any leads that come to us in terms of that investigation.”
Andrea Polanco
“What can you tell us about the shots fired at the building; how many expended shells were recovered?”
ASP Francisco Ack
“Well, the police and the scenes of crime personnel retrieved thirteen expended shells and six glass panels were shot at and broken.”
Andrea Polanco
“Along that area you have several businesses and perhaps surveillance cameras; are you guys looking into using that kinda information to help you with your investigation?”
ASP Francisco Ack
“At this point yes, we are looking at one footage as we speak but it is not showing the image clearly, so we are having difficulty identifying the person, but we are hoping to get some additional experts so that we can probably clarify the image , so we could eventually identify the person seen in that area.”
Andrea Polanco
“What about the vehicle? Do you have any kind of information on what kind of vehicle was used?”
ASP Francisco Ack
“At this point, no. We know that a vehicle was used but we don’t have any details or particulars of such vehicle. At this point nobody has any idea of what triggered the shooting; so at this point nobody has any idea about it.”
Andrea Polanco
“Do you think you will have any luck, so to speak, to figure what this is all about and to identify the individual?”
ASP Francisco Ack
“Well, we are hoping to do so and as our investigation progresses we look to bring that to a close.”
