Minor Detained in Alleged Retaliation Killing of Trevaun Chee

Trevaun Chee

There was a second murder recorded over the weekend, similar to that of Peters. Twenty-two-year-old Trevaun Chee was hit multiple times to the head and body allegedly with an aluminum bat in broad daylight on Friday afternoon in front of many witnesses on Mahogany Street Extension in Belize City.  Two days later, on Sunday night, Chee would succumb to his injuries while receiving treatment at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Word is that the attack was in retaliation for an incident last year in which Chee and a police officer were accused of shooting a resident from the area. Police have since detained a minor for the murder. News Five’s Duane Moody reports on the latest homicide in the city.

Two days after he was bashed to the head with a metal bat on Mahogany Street Extension, twenty-two-year-old Trevaun Chee dies and his brutal attack investigation upgrades to a case of murder. Chee was struck multiple times to the head and body with what residents say was an aluminum bat and left for dead just after two p.m. on Friday.

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino, CIB, Belize City

“On Friday, about two-ten p.m., police responded to a person suffering from injuries on the Mahogany Street Extension. When police arrived, they discovered Trevaun Chee, a twenty-two-year-old resident of a Mahogany Street address, suffering from injuries to the right side of his shoulder and the right side of his face.”

A gravely injured Chee was still very conscious following the attack, despite bleeding profusely from the mouth. Police arrived at the scene soon after his common-law wife and family members rushed to the scene. Chee was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in a critical condition; he succumbed to his injuries around seven p.m. on Sunday.

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“He was transported to the K.H.M.H. and was admitted for treatment on Saturday…when he was admitted he was responsive and on Saturday, his condition went critical and on Sunday, about seven p.m. he passed away at the hospital.”

Back in July of 2016, Chee along with a police officer were charged for the attempted murder of twenty-nine-year old Nigel Castillo, who was shot to the abdomen as he socialized at a basketball court in the Saint Martin De Porres area.

But even before he died, Chee was able to identify his attacker to his family and the investigating officer.  That person, who has been fingered to be a seventeen-year-old minor of the same area, has since been detained pending charges for murder.

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“Police have so far detained a minor in regards to this incident and we have collected relevant statements and those statements have been forwarded to the D.P.P. and we are awaiting her directives on how we proceed. The deceased Mister Chee was traveling on Mahogany Street and encountered the minor. There was a provocation of sort and that resulted in the minor allegedly inflicting the injuries on Mister Chee.”

“Is the minor known to police? And when you say a minor, how old?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“A seventeen-year-old. He is known to police; he is in custody at this time and like I said, we have obtained statements and we are awaiting directives at this point.”

According to reports, Chee was attacked from behind as he stood on his bicycle on Mahogany Street Extension, in proximity of his house. Police, however, say that the incident was provoked.

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“We are looking into that. The investigation is still ongoing as we speak. The officers are out there trying to locate or sort additional information into it.”

Reporter

“Was anything taken from him?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“No, it was not a case of robbery.”

Reporter
“Was there other people around?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“We are looking for witnesses. It happened at two o’clock in the afternoon on Mahogany Street Extension, on a Friday afternoon. So if anybody has any information that could assist, we would welcome any assistance at this point.”
