Taiwan Cements Formal Relations with Belize as Foreign Affairs Minister Visits
Taiwanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Doctor David Tawei Lee and his wife, Chih Lin arrived in Belize on Wednesday and were hosted at an event in Belmopan. While the media was not made aware of the official visit by the foreign minister, we did receive an excerpt from the welcome ceremony. An address by C.E.O. in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Patrick Andrews, recognized the distinguished delegation, with Doctor Lee being conferred the Order of Distinction of Belize. The event was also used to sign off on a memorandum of understanding between both countries for continued bilateral relations. Here’s what C.E.O. Andrews had to say.

“This afternoon, we are gathered here as witnesses to two very important events. The first is the signing of the memorandum of understanding on bilateral cooperation between our two governments. In this regard, the government of Taiwan has been a most vigorous, dependable and committed partner in Belize and in Belize’s development. The type of development cooperation that we enjoy with Taiwan is incomparable in both its reach, consistency, dependability and flexibility it affords to the government of Belize. Today, we will bear witness to this with the signing of this MOU. In this climate of constantly declining development support, it is good to know that there are friends who remain steadfast no matter the change of circumstance. As a show of our solidarity and appreciation to the people and government of Taiwan, we will also witness the conferral of the order of distinction to the Honorable, Doctor David Li.”
On Friday, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan and Belize will be hosting a joint press briefing at the Samuel Haynes Institute of Learning in Belize City where questions from the media will be entertained. Of note is that today, the delegation visited the Tilapia Hatchery Centre in Central Farm. The visit served as a review of the completed aquaculture project by the Agriculture Department and the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund. The group was also given an update on the Genetic Improvement in Sheep and Goat Project.
