Hilmar Alamilla Charged for Murder of Daniel Sosa – But Was It Murder?

Four men lost their lives in the past four days, although only two are counted as murder victims and police continue to investigate the two others. Twenty-four year old Daniel Sosa of San Antonio Road in Orange Walk Town was shot dead early Saturday morning. Tonight, forty-two-year old Hilmar Alamilla, the well-known political operative and right-hand man of former Government Minister Gaspar Vega, is behind bars on a most serious charge of murder. A night of socializing ended abruptly when Sosa was shot once in the left temple. The exact circumstances of how Sosa was shot, why he came to be at the D’Victoria Hotel parking lot where his body was found, and most importantly the motive behind the fatal shooting remain unknown. Aaron Humes files the following report.

“About five-thirty-five a.m. on Saturday, police visited the D’Victoria [Hotel] parking lot based on information received, where a male person was seen lying face down with injuries to the head. The person was removed from there and was taken to the Northern Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty. Police carried out further investigation into the matter, where three persons were detained, and later one Hilmar Alamilla was arrested and charged for murder.”

Hilmar Alamilla is no stranger to our television screens. The Government conceded in May that it had no case against the forty-two year old in the matter of unlawful land compensation granted to his associate Andre Vega, for just over an acre of land that Alamilla sold Vega for fifteen thousand dollars, having bought it for two thousand five hundred dollars. The Government took it back as part of its plans for the area and compensated Andre Vega and owner of an adjoining property, Sharon Pitts to the handsome tune of four hundred thousand dollars each. But the latest charges are altogether more serious – and mysterious, since it is alleged that the two men were friends.

“They were out there socializing.”

“So is it believed that Mr. Alamilla shot and killed Mr. Sosa?”

Supt. David Chi

“Based on our investigation, hence why he was charged.”

Reporter

“Was there some sort of altercation between the two men prior to the shooting?”

Supt. David Chi

“We have no [indication in our] investigation that they had any prior altercation.”

Reporter

“Has the weapon been located?”

Supt. David Chi

“Nope.”

Reporter

“Sir, do we know if Danny Sosa was murdered in the area where his body was found or in another location and his body was then dumped in that area?”

“Exactly; his body was dumped there. Where his body was found was not where he was shot.”

“Where do police believe he was shot, sir?”

Supt. David Chi

“Nearby.”

Alamilla was brought to court under heavy police guard, a matter of security according to Superintendent David Chi. He did not take responsibility for a decision to disallow reporters inside the courtroom. There are allegations that several of those involved were under the influence of drug substances including cocaine, and police confirmed that they have not located the gun used in the incident, although they are trying to.

“I can assure you that we do a thorough investigation; we did all that we had to do; no screws were left unturned.”

“Including urine sample, blood sample?”

“We did a thorough investigation; all screws were turned, if you understand what I mean by all screws were turned.”

Reporter

“Sir, do we know if the weapon that was used – any evidence at this time that it actually belonged to Mr. Alamilla? Did he have a licensed weapon?”

Supt. David Chi

“I know he had licensed a weapon – I don’t know if he still has that weapon. But I know he had a licensed weapon; I don’t know if the weapon was his live weapon; I can’t say that.”

“Do police believe that he disposed of the weapon?”

Supt. David Chi

“I can’t say that.”

Reporter

“So, have checks been made or have you been trying to find that weapon that was used to commit the crime?”

Supt. David Chi

“I have said already that under my stewardship, all screws have been turned; I think you understand what I mean by all screws has been turned.”

And the senior cop said he will turn a blind eye to any political machinations.

Supt. David Chi

“What you are asking doesn’t matter important to me. A person lost his life; we did an investigation, it has led to Mr. Alamilla as the accused right now and he has been charged. Whatever people think, whatever people feel, the political side – that’s their business. I am a police officer and I will do what I have to do to let justice be [served]. At the day of the hearing, the trial, the outcome, that’s it – justice. That’s my job. What people think or the political side, that is not important to me.”
