Venezuela thanks Belize for O.A.S. support

The fight over Venezuela also continues in the Organization of American States. Countries not aligned with the Bolivarian Alliance of the Americas (ALBA) have tended to vote in favour of resolutions condemning and censuring the Venezuelan government.  Belize is on the side of those supporting Venezuela’s right to self-determination but has condemned gambits such as the Supreme Court’s takeover of the legislative assembly’s power. Venezuelan chargé d’Affaires Miguel Castillo said their opponents in the O.A.S. are rejecting the will of the Venezuelan people.

“There was an election that was held last week, the twenty-sixth of July, I think, after the Mexico meeting, in which the O.A.S. permanent council opened again the topic of Venezuela. It was a proposal obviously encouraged by Mr. Almagro. He only got thirteen votes for that, while in Cancun, I can’t quite remember exactly, around twenty in the last election of the permanent council they got thirteen. Belize voted against on this attempt against Venezuela. On the eighth of August they will attempt to do a mini-OAS meeting about Venezuela with the participation of the same countries that have rejected and ignored the will of the Venezuelan people in favour of the national constituent assembly, in favour of peace, in favour of democracy, and in favour of the elected president, Nicolas Maduro.”
