Mexico Says Thanks for Earthquake Help

Two devastating earthquakes struck central and south-western Mexico in succession between September seventh and nineteenth. Between them they have caused more than four hundred deaths and extensive material damage. As bad as things have been, the rest of the nations of the world, led by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has pitched in to help. A statement from the Mexican Embassy in Belize notes today that twenty-three countries from Argentina to Venezuela as well as the European Union have donated technical and material support, and many others, including Belize, have pledged support, not to mention non-governmental organizations and companies. To all of them, press and consular officer Hugo Juarez Carrillo says thank you, and that Mexico will rebuild.

“We have received the support of many countries from all over the world – as far as China, as close as Belize, that have offered their support. And we are so humbled about this reaction that the world has had to our country. I can tell you that from the first second after this earthquake, especially after the September nineteenth one but after the seventh of September too, the Mexican people started removing the rubbish that [was] created [from] this terrible event. But at the same time, our effort was complemented thanks to the help and support of many countries that we know are our friends, many that are out brothers. And shoulder to shoulder the Mexican soldiers, the Mexican navy men, the Mexican police, the people of Mexico – the youngsters, the youth, the millenials as they are called, and the foreign experts and specialists – they removed the rubbish that were over all of our people. Unfortunately, today we can count at least three hundred and thirty-three people dead because of the September nineteenth earthquake, plus one hundred more from the September seventh. And it’s going to take a long time to rebuild but there is an effort in order to provide support for the families that lost everything.”
