Lost Teen ‘Followed the Sun’ to Come Home

At a press conference held by Prime Minister Barrow this afternoon, Assistant Commissioner of Police Chester Williams recounted parts of Kelvin Usher’s disappearance, following a debriefing at the Raccoon Street Police Station. The teenager admitted to police earlier today that he simply got lost in the wilderness of Lucky Strike after fleeing from gunshots, fired by the Gang Suppression Unit.  While that explanation is logical, what is puzzling is that the teenager emerged from the area with superficial injuries after being missing for over four days.  The fact that he emerged on the Old Northern Road when his father was driving by this morning, after a massive search party spent countless hours scouring that location for the past three days, adds to the intrigue of the incredible story of his reappearance.  Here is how Williams explains:

“This matter began on Sunday when the GSU descended on a marijuana plantation on the Old Northern Highway in the Lucky Strike area.  As had been narrated by Superintendent Makin yesterday, when they entered the marijuana plantation they fired some warning shots and at that time a person was seen fleeing the plantation.  Now in my discussion with Kelvin Usher this morning, he confirmed that he did indeed heard shots fired and subsequent to hearing the shots fired, he took off in the bushes.  He continued by saying he spent the entire three to four days in the bushes and it was until this morning that he watched the sun rising and he decided to follow the sun, knowing that the sun would rise from the east and his way out of the farm would be east.  He said in following the sun he came upon a farm road which took him to two other subsequent farm roads and eventually to the Old Northern Highway in the general vicinity of where he had escaped from the police.  And while there waiting he saw his father’s vehicle coming and he stopped his father, he got into the vehicle and they came to Belize City.  I must say that Mr. Usher has some injuries on his hands which he said was caused by the fact that he was running in the bushes.  He said that he was in the bushes for so long because he was lost.  After he got with his father, I received information that he had been found and I communicated with his father and I was told to meet them at the Sibun Street address in Belize City.  I went there, I saw the young man along with his father and I took him to Raccoon Street Police Station where he gave a detailed account as to his activities in the bushes.  And let me make it emphatically clear that during my debriefing of him, he made it clear that at no time did he encounter the police.  He said when he heard the shots and the person shouted out police he didn’t even look back to see if it was police.  He just took off in the bushes.”
