United Nations Day in Belize

The world celebrates United Nations Day annually on October twenty-fourth to honor the organization’s promotion of human rights, social progress, and world peace.  UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says, “The United Nations works for the entire human family of seven billion people, and cares for the earth, our one and only home.” Locally, the UN office observed the day building awareness on the importance of the organization.  Appearing on Open Your Eyes this morning, Country Rep Doctor Susan Kasedde shared the core of what the U.N. is through their work with people across the world and here in Belize.

“The UN charter is the document that sets out what the purpose of the United Nations is. The UN charter has been ratified by one hundred and ninety-three nations globally and it sets out four main aims or purposes of the UN. First, to make sure that we work together to maintain peace and security and second that we establish a friendly relationship between nations based on a respect for equal rights and self-determination and the third is to foster international collaboration towards the resolution of challenges of a social, economic and humanitarian nation – based once again on the respect of human rights. Fourth, and finally, it is to ensure that we continue foster partnership towards the achievement of these deals.  So, that is what we are celebrating today. All of our agencies, UNICEF, the agency that I lead itself, is mandated by the one hundred and ninety-three nations that have ratified this charter to make sure that we lead the global efforts to promote the   and protect the rights of every child to make sure that the rights of every child are fulfilled and to make sure that every child thrive and meet their full potential.”

To date, there are one hundred and ninety-three member countries.
