Channel Five’s Marleni Cuellar Represents at Science Journalists’ Conference
Tonight, my colleague Marleni Cuellar is in San Francisco, U.S.A. where she is attending the tenth World Conference of Science Journalists. Marleni is teaming up with Channel Seven’s Courtney Weatherburne and fellow team members Tameka Lundy and Deanya Knowles of the Bahamas. The team is participating in the international forum on science journalism as a follow up to their win at the Caribbean Mediathon – an innovation challenge – last November in Barbados. The Mediathon was created to promote and improve the coverage of STEM stories and careers throughout the Caribbean. Marleni and the team’s winning idea focused on creating profiles on scientists of Caribbean heritage and packaging them in a special publication for children. Over one thousand two hundred journalists from over seventy countries are represented with Marleni and Courtney, the only participants from Belize. The five-day event is addressing journalism in Latin America, climate change, the covering of indigenous voices and fact-checking in the future of journalism. Guest speakers include: John Holden of Harvard University and Susan Desmond-Hellman, the C.E.O. of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
