Mexico Gets Settlement Day Party Started
The Mexican Embassy is celebrating with the Garinagu of Belize. The nineteenth is two days away, but tonight the Embassy is hosting an event at the Mexican Institute in Belize City. They have collaborated with the National Garifuna Council and Luba Garifuna Museum to share the culture with the wider public. Diego Sapien of the Embassy tells us why it’s important to the Mexican Embassy to recognize and celebrate Garifuna Settlement Day every year:
Diego Sapien, Officer in Charge of Cultural & Educational Affairs, Mexican Embassy
“This year we are teaming up with the National Garifuna Council in Belize City and the Luba Garifuna Museum with Miss Cynthia Cayetano and Professor Sebastian Cayetano – directors of Luba Garifuna Museum. With them, we are going to team up to celebrate in Belize City to celebrate the Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations. Every year, we try to celebrate and try to share Garifuna customs and traditions. We have to remember that the Mexican Institute is not only to promote Mexican culture or artists, but it is well known in the community to share local festivities, local culture and that is why we want to embrace and celebrate with the Belizean community an important tradition such as Garifuna Settlement Day.”
